Hi Friends,
When I started writing on Substack, it felt like stepping into an open field with endless possibilities. But as I published more, I realized that just writing wasn’t enough. To connect with more readers, I needed to understand the subtle dynamics of how Substack works—its “algorithm,” if you will.
Today, I want to share my ongoing journey of learning how Substack promotes content and how I’ve been experimenting to grow my audience.
What I Know About Substack’s Algorithm (So Far)
Unlike social media platforms with opaque algorithms, Substack’s discovery process is refreshingly straightforward—but still nuanced. Here are a few things I’ve observed:
Email Engagement Matters:
Substack prioritizes email open rates and click-through rates. If readers consistently engage with your emails, your newsletter gains visibility in Substack’s internal discovery sections.
Consistency is Key:
Publishing regularly builds momentum. Whether it’s weekly or bi-weekly, sticking to a schedule signals to Substack (and your readers) that you’re dependable.
Referrals and Recommendations:
The “recommendation” feature lets writers support each other. Collaborating with other writers can introduce your work to entirely new audiences.
Quality Trumps Quantity:
Readers appreciate substance over volume. A thoughtful, well-crafted piece will resonate more and be shared widely than multiple rushed articles.
Experiments I’m Trying
Tracking Engagement Metrics:
I’ve been paying close attention to open and click rates in my dashboard. By tweaking subject lines and experimenting with storytelling techniques, I’m learning what resonates with my audience.
Testing Different Post Types:
From in-depth essays to bite-sized reflections, I’m exploring what kind of content sparks interest. Recently, a shorter, reflective post outperformed a detailed one, teaching me that brevity can sometimes pack a punch.
Collaborating with Fellow Writers:
I’ve reached out to a few Substack writers I admire to exchange recommendations. It’s a mutually beneficial way to grow and connect with new readers.
Encouraging Reader Feedback:
Feedback like “refined chaos” from a reader inspired me to embrace imperfection. I now actively ask for reader input to learn what they value most.
What’s Next?
My journey with Substack is far from over. I’m learning that understanding any platform—whether it’s algorithms or community dynamics—takes patience, trial, and a willingness to evolve.
To my fellow creators: what strategies have you tried on Substack? Let’s share tips and tricks in the comments or reply to this email. I’d love to hear about your experiences!
Until next time,
Mizna from Mind and Muse.
Thanks for sharing, very helpful!!!
